The Oncoming Russian Cyberattacks on the US and How to Prepare

2/28/2022

Experts say the Russia-Ukraine conflict puts the world in uncharted territory.

As Russia's military continues to strike Ukrainian cities, national security officials are keeping eyes on a different battlefield.

Senior U.S. law enforcement and Homeland Security officials have told ABC News that there is growing concern that Russia could launch further cyberattacks against the West. The potential targets include electrical grids, banking systems and mobile networks, according to the officials.

Currently, there is no cyber threat to the U.S. homeland, according to the Department of Homeland security.

Cybersecurity experts tell ABC News that people shouldn't panic over a potential cyberattack, but they should start preparing for one.

"Freaking out is not a productive thing to do. There are lots of reasons to think that the fact that something is out there but that doesn't mean it could happen," Stuart Madnick, the founding director of Cybersecurity at MIT Sloan, told ABC News. "But there are still a number of things that people can do to stay safe and protected."

Madnick, whose group has consulted with U.S. agencies and private companies such as Nasdaq, said the world is in uncharted territory when it comes to cyber security since this involves alleged cyberattacks by a major superpower. However, what has transpired so far is similar to previous cyber security incidents, he said.

There are two types of cyberattacks, he said: ones that have an indirect impact on people's livelihood and attacks targeting the tech of specific people.

The biggest indirect hacking examples in the past have targeted key infrastructure points such as the Colonial Pipeline ransomware attack in May 2021, which affected everything from gas prices to flights.

"In the last two years, we've been seeing more of these attacks around the world," Madnick said. "You need to realize how many of our systems are connected to computers and just one hack can have bigger effects."

U.S. and international officials have accused the Russian government of committing cyber attacks that targeted Ukraine's banks in recent weeks.

On Friday, Ukrainian officials warned of a phishing scheme emanating from Belarus, which pretended to be a member of the Ukrainian cybersecurity agency.

Javed Ali, the former senior director of counterterrorism at the National Security Council, told ABC News that the attacks could escalate to affect utilities, such as gas and electricity.

"Those will be escalatory steps from Russia and that will also likely be integrated with physical military operations all designed to bring cascading effects against Ukraine," he said.

Madnick warned that cyberattacks on the Ukrainian computer systems could potentially spill over to other regions depending on how close computer networks work.

However, he noted, that U.S. officials are paying close attention to online activity.

Ali said it's hard to predict if Russia would take such an action on the West since it would mean an immediate retaliation from countries with their own state-of-the-art tools and tactics.

"The thresholds for those operations being launched, the effects, [and] the duration those are all things would have to be thought through very carefully," Ali said. "But U.S. Cyber Command is the lead for military operations from the United States, has a world-class capability."

The Department of Homeland Security, the agency tasked with the domestic response to the invasion in Ukraine, has set up a page on the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency's website specifically warning of cyber-attacks emanating from Russia.

Earlier this week, the U.S. Cybersecurity & Infrastructure Security Agency sent an advisory to businesses and organizations urging them to enact a "shields up" guidance.

"While there are not currently any specific credible threats to the U.S. homeland, we are mindful of the potential for the Russian government to consider escalating its destabilizing actions in ways that may impact others outside of Ukraine," the agency said in its letter.

The federal government has called on businesses to make sure their information technology teams update their computer software to close any vulnerabilities and train their employees to watch out for any malware.

Madnick said the preparedness of such attacks varies by sector and their experience as cyberattack victims.

"Organizations like banks that have been targeted for a long time have done a better job in shoring up their cybersecurity," he said. "Others, like hospitals and smaller municipalities that haven't been attacked in the past tend not to do well."

Madnick said when it comes to individual Americans, there is very little they could do to prevent an indirect attack on the country's infrastructure systems, but they should always prepare for the possibility. He likened it to preparing for a big storm and suggested that individuals who are concerned about their money should always have cash available for emergencies.

Madnick also urged people to back up their important computer files, including bank statements, important e-mails and other documents frequently and to offline sources such as an external drive.

"Everyone should be doing this regardless of increasing cyber threats," he said.

Madnick said cyber attackers linked to foreign agencies wouldn't likely conduct attacks that target individual Americans, but people should still be mindful of the vulnerabilities in their tech. Having updated anti-virus and malware software, staying on top of computer updates and avoiding any suspicious links and e-mails, go a long way he said.

"Cyberattacks and cyber security are not something we talk about a lot, but we need to," he said. "This is not a brand new issue."

Available Expert Project Manager

Do you need long term or one-off expert project management help right now? I am a very experienced tech project manager with more than 20 years of successful project management experience. I can be available immediately and I can do remote or onsite, full-time or part-time, W2 or 1099. Contact me by email or through my contact form here. Let's discus. Thanks!

My motto is:

"You're only as successful as your last customer thinks you are..."

What does your organization look for in a project management leader?  A 'yes' man? Do you want someone who will listen to you and do exactly what you ask them to do? Hopefully not.  My clients are intelligent and experienced, but they don't always know exactly what they need.  They often don't even know for sure exactly what they want - though they may think that they do.

That might be the case for you as well.

If you decide to seek out my services, what you will get is an experienced professional who is more interested in actually understanding your true needs, how you got to where you are now, and what will satisfy you in the end.

It's not about 'phoning it in' on a project.  It's not always about getting it done in 'x' amount of time, either.  But it IS always about customer satisfaction.  It's about giving you - the customer - something you can live with and be happy with and that your end users can actually use.

Crypto Investing - Key Info for 2022

2/22/2022

Here's what's going on in the world of crypto and crypto investing:
  • El Salvador became the first country to adopt bitcoin as legal tender in 2021. Will others follow? The law has already proven successful in a few ways for El Salvador.
  • Bitcoin reached its all-time peak of nearly $69,000 in November of 2021. Could it swing even higher in 2022?
  • Tesla, the electric carmaker headed by billionaire Elon Musk, has started to allow people to buy brand merchandise using Dogecoin.
  • Major investors are moving more and more of their assets into Bitcoin since it outperformed gold by a margin of 127% last year.
  • Crypto became a household name thanks to sponsorship and naming rights deals for sports arenas in major cities like Miami and Los Angeles.

5 Reasons to start investing in crypto right now....

Cryptocurrency as a hedge against inflation
Inflation levels in the USA reached 40-year peaks in 2021. Heading into 2022, the US Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that the consumer price index rose 7% for all items. This was the highest recorded increase since 1982. Many factors can lead to higher inflation; one major factor is more free money flowing into the economy. Bitcoin’s value is actually deflationary, meaning its purchasing power is more likely to increase over time. Bitcoin’s scarcity is why some consider it to be an effective hedge against inflation. There will only ever be 21 million Bitcoin in existence. Ever. That built-in scarcity is why some investors rushed to hold Bitcoin during a period of rising inflation.

Local governments are increasingly looking at crypto

Everyone knows about taxes. But what are cities and local governments doing with that tax revenue? Increasingly, cities are looking at ways to save their cash reserves in crypto. Part of it is the anti-inflationary hedge mentioned above, but another part of it is that cities and local governments see crypto as a growing opportunity to attract talent while stabilizing their balance sheets. When civic leaders are asking to receive their paychecks in crypto, that means that the average citizen may not be far behind.

Think crypto’s too complicated? Crypto IS casual

Investors aren't the only people holding assets tied to the blockchain. Non-fungible tokens, better known as NFTs, exploded in the past year. More casual collectors and gamers found themselves holding and trading NFTs as this term created major buzz, even rising to become the “word of the year” for 2021 according to Collins Dictionary. This rapid adoption meant that more people started utilizing the technology that powers crypto, the blockchain, and proving its versatility while also becoming owners of some pretty cool digital art. Where can NFTs go from here? The possibilities are vast.

Powering a new global payments system
Sending payments around the world used to mean tapping into a series of complicated networks. There are wire fees, differing exchange rates, and of course the thorny issue of how the recipient may store or even access the funds once they’re transferred over. With crypto, the process is so simple and streamlined that people may begin to wonder why it was ever done any other way. Imagine deciding how much you want to send to someone, pushing a ‘send money’ button, then it’s done. It’s that simple! No third-parties involved, no ridiculous wire fees, no opaque exchange rates controlled by central governments. Just assets flowing from one digital wallet to the next.

The pool of investors isn’t huge – for now

We mentioned there will only ever be 21 million Bitcoin in existence. Did you know that close to 19 million of that supply has already been mined as of January, 2022? There are just over 2 million Bitcoin remaining to be mined. Think it’s too late? Hardly. According to a Pew Research Center Survey conducted in 2021, 16% of Americans have invested, traded or otherwise used cryptocurrency. That means the vast majority of Americans still haven’t dipped into this expanding market. Bitcoin came into existence in 2009. And back in 2015, only 1% of people surveyed had ever used Bitcoin. Now here we are, over 13 years later and the total market cap for all cryptocurrencies has risen to more than $3 trillion dollars. The pool is getting bigger, there’s no doubt about that. The real question is, how early do you want to dive in?

Four Project Management Trends for 2022

2/21/2022

Picture
Every year even the perceived static world of project management changes somewhat. Even sometimes for the better. Trends happen, ideas and methodologies change a bit, and companies work to build PM infrastructures that manage projects better and have better tools at their disposal.

Here...below...are four trends that I've been predicting and demanding and am finally seeing and hearing are happening – at least to some degree – throughout project management infrastructures in organizations. Please think about trends you might be witnessing as well and share your thoughts after reading...

The emergence of top level project management leadership in the corporation

I suggested it – along with others, I realize – and it seems to be catching on. Not necessarily as the CPO (Chief Project/Program Officer) I envisioned, but I am seeing more PMO directors reporting directly to C-level individuals and even the CEO in some cases. This is good news – as in order to have a successful project management infrastructure - especially in larger organizations running more complex and high dollar projects – it is imperative that your organization's senior leadership be involved and back the endeavor full-on. Otherwise, projects that are conceived in the organization may be run as one-off efforts by internal departments and individuals forced into one-time PM roles with no past PM experience and therefore no lessons learned knowledge or available templates to work from to help ensure more frequent project successes.

Company-wide project status reporting

I'm a proponent of one size fits all project reporting to meet the needs of all stakeholders with one weekly report so the project manager isn't spending all of his time tailoring reports to meet the requests of different groups interested in his project. The one size fits all report must have a great dashboard that can show project health at a glance for your C-levels who need that info fast and even your customer will want that for passing up the chain of command in his organization. But what we are also seeing is an emergence of project status reports going out almost as enterprise-wide newsletters to the entire organization. And why not...it helps give team members recognition throughout the project for jobs and deliverables well done, and it is a quick, smooth way to make sure that anyone who might need info on a project...has it. Amen...smart move.

Executives sitting in on project status meetings

I'm seeing it personally more and it's a good thing. And I'm hearing it from colleagues. Senior leadership needs to be involved periodically in ongoing project status meetings – both to help keep projects on track especially when trouble arises and to show those very important and high-paying clients that they care. I'm not saying that a CEO can solve a technical problem ailing a project. Rather, if a project is in trouble, they can become more aware by attending and be better equipped to know which roadblocks they need to help knock down to get the project back on track. Please, it tells the client that “we are on this.” Both help a lot. And in times of the smooth running project, it just speaks loudly saying “you are important to us.”

Project managers becoming more involved in the pre-sales process with clients

I did this once with an organization in the early 2000's...helped all of my internal departments that I was leading projects for run through estimating so they could budget well for their upcoming year full of project needs. It worked so well – all their project budgets...looking at them one year later...we were much closer to on target than had ever been the case. Get those project managers involved early on as full-on engagement managers and there will be less customer expectation setting and re-setting once the potential project becomes a real project and is ready to be kicked off and have requirements gathered. Project managers are better equipped to provide a more clear picture of what a project will look like and cost in terms of effort and outcome and what the customer needs to be involved in along the way. And now, from what I'm seeing and hearing from colleagues, it is happening to a greater degree than I've ever witnessed before.

Summary / call for input

There are other important trends in PM that are emerging, I'm sure. However, these four have always been important to me and I'm finally seeing them happening at least to some greater degree. How about our readers – what are you seeing in terms of any new happenings in project management? Any new client demands or needs that are emerging? Please share and discuss.

I can be available immediately and I can do remote or onsite, full-time or part-time, W2 or 1099. Contact me by email or through my contact form here. Let's discuss. Thanks!
