Lead By Example

7/31/2019

Picture
The project team is going to need to take leadership and direction from both the project manager and the business analyst. We hope the project manager is a great, ethical leader. If not, you probably should do yourself, the customer and the team a favor and take him to task on it. If problems persist, go to his manager. But you, as the business analyst and co-project lead of sorts, have a responsibility to the team, customer and management to practice ethical project leadership behavior as well. So lead by example – always. Be above and beyond reproach – especially during team and client meetings and in front of these individuals on a daily and weekly basis.

Follow through on your work and project commitments, and practice honesty. Don't say bad things about others or the client behind their backs no matter what you might be thinking. It doesn't need to be spoken. The project needs action not gossip. If you see something going on that is less than ethical or even illegal, consider yourself to be somewhat of a “mandatory reporter” and take it higher up in order to get action and not harm the project.

The PMP Exam is Going Through a Major Change

From Cheetah Learning...

The New PMP Exam Is MUCH DIFFERENT

This is our 7th PMP Exam change in 18 years – and it’s the biggest one yet.

PMI is moving away from a Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK) based approach to the PMP exam.

It’s more like what we saw when PMI created the PMI-Agile Certified Practioner (ACP) Program.
Picture
This is a major change to the PMP exam and it will make irrelevant all the PMP exam prep material that is circulating on how to pass the PMP that just had to be updated incrementally.

When the PMI-ACP Exam Content Outline came out – we dove into it to create our own Cheetah PMI-ACP BOK. We are doing the same thing for this new PMP exam. We are validating this new approach to passing the PMP exam to roll out our new PMP Exam Prep course late February 2020.

Cybersecurity Tip: Wakeup Call About Posting Your Kids’ Pics on Social Media

7/26/2019

Ouch! Proud parents... we should probably wake up and stop doing this to our kids. Are we damaging the 10 years from now version of them?

Dear parents, please don’t post photos of your children on social media publicly.

First of all, think about when those kids will grow up and their whole lives will be available publicly, will be there to use against them, to shame them. This is most likely to happen among teenagers, a period when kids are extremely harsh with each other.

Second, you never know where those pics will end up.

There’ve been cases of private Facebook groups where people were sharing other people’s kid pics and making fun of them. Or, even worse: pedophiles. Imagine what could happen if a pedophile would put together all the information you are willingly sharing on your social network: the area where you live, your kid’s school, the park where your kid plays, etc.

The Disruptive Business Analyst

7/25/2019

To throw into confusion, throw into disorder, throw into disarray, cause confusion/turmoil in, play havoc with.”

From a technology perspective, it refers to “any enhanced or completely new technology that replaces and disrupts an existing technology, rendering it obsolete. It is designed to succeed similar technology that is already in use. Disruptive technology applies to hardware, software, networks and combined technologies.”
Picture
So, what about the disruptive business analyst? I work mostly with tech projects so for me the disruptive business analyst is working with what we used to call bleeding edge technology on new projects for anxiously awaiting project clients leading tech teams on exciting and sometimes dangerous new project adventures. End users and subject matter experts are awaiting a nearly ready solution during user acceptance testing (UAT) and at implementation rollout to the end user community with this creative solution. Hopefully the tech team... and the business analyst... along with the project manager have provided a workable solution that meets their requirements dead on. This can be difficult, of course, anytime you're moving to a new technology that you've not worked with before, the project team hasn't worked with before, the client has never likely seen or used it before, and that may not have been implemented in the client's type of industry before. You're on the edge... you're going where no one has gone before (well, with that customer in that industry anyway...)...

Cybersecurity Tip: Just Say No to Real Time Check-ins

7/25/2019

No real time check-ins...
Never check in when you are leaving the house for longer periods of time (such as holidays).

That includes no posting of flight tickets and holiday pics - at least not while you’re still away from home.

Something so common and apparently innocent can turn into a nightmare. There were plenty of cases of people who checked-in from their holidays, bragged about the wonderful places they’re visiting, only to come back home and find out that their house became the target of burglars.

You never know who else can benefit from the information you are sharing. You can never fully control and restrict who’s watching your social networks posts.

Cybersecurity Tip: Keep Your Bank Account in Check

7/23/2019

Check your bank statements every other day (your online banking can help you do that easily).

Look for suspicious activity and, if any, alert your bank, change all passwords related to that account and make sure to activate every security measure available.

Paranoia can be an ok thing...

Cybersecurity Tip: Check Your Mobile Apps

7/19/2019

Take a quick glance over your mobile apps, see what you have installed there.

- Revoke permissions for apps that require access to sensitive information - why would a flashlight app request access to read your messages, for example?

- Keep your apps updated - this lowers the chances for malware to take advantage of their vulnerabilities.

- Remove any apps you haven’t been using - they are vulnerabilities for your security and privacy.

And remember to never install apps from anywhere else but the official app store. In Android, there’s a setting that also doesn’t allow apps from third parties to be installed.
