I was once again watching one of my four little ones’ favorite shows – Peep and the Big Wide World (which happen to consider to be just about the greatest kids’ show ever made) – and I thought of this article. The title for the episode was “The Road not Taken” and it was about how one of the friends kept getting distracted on his way to the other friend’s tree so he was always late. Eventually they figured out the shortest path and he started to take it all the time and was always arriving on time in the morning, but every day was the same…life had become monotonous. So they had him go back to wandering on his way there and he was late again – but happy.
What that brings to mind for me are several things.
We must do what makes us happy or we won’t be productive, may not do quality work, and we certainly won’t be enjoying what we do. It doesn’t mean we don’t have to pay attention to the clock, the schedule, the budget and everything else that is constraining us along the way. We do. But we don’t have to follow the same monotonous processes every day, all day, to get there.
What that brings to mind for me are several things.
